The earliest operas contained prologues instead of ouvertures. In them, allegorical or mythological figures prepared the audience for the force and the passion of the events to come. In the earliest operas, the prologues were often very short, but they quickly became small operas in themselves and for the composer a stage from which he could reflect upon his own art. No finer example exists than the prologue to Claudio Monteverdi’s l’Orfeo, where Music itself sings and leads the audience into the ensuing drama. This program presents the most beautiful opera prologues of the 17th century opera by composers such as Monteverdi, Scarlatti, Caccini and Cesti, chosen by conductor Enrico Onofri and soprano Francesca Aspromonte.

Il pomo d’oro, a baroque music ensemble from beautiful Venice, is a regular guest prestigious concert halls and theatres, such as the Théâtre Royal in Versailles, Wigmore Hall, Theater an der Wien, Théâtre des Champs Elysées, Hamburg Elbphilharmonie and this is their second visit to the Turku Music Festival.
