In August 2019, the crowning glory of the festival is a concert of music by Johann Sebastian Bach presented by Concerto Köln, one of Europe’s finest Baroque ensembles, and baritone Benjamin Appl. After a recital he gave at Wigmore Hall in London a couple of years ago, the editor of Gramophone magazine wrote that Appl has a natural charm that captivates his audience. Appl has made it his priority to attract younger audiences to appreciate classical vocal art. His disc ‘Heimat’ won a prize at the Academie du Disque Lyrique in France in 2018, and his most recent release with Concerto Köln on the Sony label has been well received. This guest performance is a tribute to the twinning of Turku and Köln.
