VILLE URPONEN is one of Finland’s best-known organists. Having studied the organ and the piano with Kari Jussila and Meri Louhos at the Sibelius Academy, he went on to study the organ with Jacques van Oortmerssen in Amsterdam. He completed a D.Mus. degree in 2009.
Ville Urponen has appeared in several European countries (including a performance at the legendary Thomaskirche in Leipzig in summer 2020), in Japan, in South Korea, in China and in Russia (with the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, among others). He is particularly keen on the works of J.S. Bach and performed all of Bach’s organ works in summer 2012, but he also has an interest in Finnish Romantic music and in contemporary music, as witness the more than 30 new works that he has premiered. Urponen is a part-time lecturer in organ at the Sibelius Academy and artistic director of the Turku Organ Festival. He was the chairman of the oldest organ music society in the Nordic countries, the Organum Society, from 2003 to 2009. In 2015, he was awarded the Organum Society trophy for his prominent and long-standing contributions to the art of the organ.
