Pia Freund

PIA FREUND, one of Finland’s internationally best-known sopranos, emerged in the 1990s when she won no fewer than four competitions. She is recognised particularly as a performer of the music of Kaija Saariaho, having appeared as Clemence in L’amour de loin and as Refka in Adriana Mater and in the world premiere of La Passion de Simone. She has also given the world premieres of numerous other contemporary works such as the monologue opera Lelele by Lotta Wennäkoski and Amor, el mar, y la noche by Matthew Whittall.

Pia Freund studied in the opera programme at the Sibelius Academy and with Professor Dorothy Irving in Sweden. She regularly appears with prominent orchestras and conductors in Europe and has a number of expert duties and elected posts. She also teaches in Finland and abroad. Her merits include the Sibelius Prize awarded by the Sibelius Society in Hämeenlinna. She has made recordings for the Ondine, Finlandia, Alba and Naxos labels.
