Marzi Nyman

MARZI NYMAN is a musical polymath hailing from the culturally rich lands of Lohja to the west of Helsinki. He studied the piano and music theory at the Länsi-Uusimaa Music institute from 1986 to 1996, went on to the Tapiola Upper Secondary School and the Espoo Pop and Jazz Institute (Ebel), and is now studying composition at the Department of Jazz at the Sibelius Academy. Marzi has performed in a wide variety of contexts, from symphony orchestras to jazz bands, from theatrical spectacles to leading an orchestra on TV. He has also written music for film and TV – as a curiosity among his output we may mention the work commissioned by the Lahti Organ Festival in 2013: a concerto for organ, electric guitar, string quartet, alphorn and Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Marzi has been conductor of the Espoo Big Band since 2012, and in 2013 he became an Artist-in-Assocation with the Tapiola Sinfonietta. He still holds both posts boldly and feels he is on the top of the world. His merits include Artist of the Year at the Pori Jazz Festival in 2003, the Teosto Prize for his début album MARZI (2006) and the City of Espoo Culture Prize in 2014.
