Sax player JUKKA PERKO made his jazz breakthrough in his teens at the Pori Jazz Festival in summer 1986. In the following summer, he was invited to join the orchestra for the 70th-anniversary tour of trumpetist Dizzy Gillespie. Subsequently, he has added Finnish roots to jazz rhythms and flights of fancy, in the form of traditional hymns and the classic schlagers recorded by legendary singer Olavi Virta.
Music is for Jukka Perko a way of life. He learned to make music like he learned to speak, by listening and imitating. He approaches music through silence, describing his attitude to performing and composing as a balancing act between perfectionism and the acceptance of imperfection. Perhaps this is why some say a sense of mercy and grace can be sensed in his music.
