ELISABETH LEONSKAJA has been one of the great pianists of our time for decades. Born in Tbilisi in Georgia into a Russian family, she was a child prodigy and gave her first recital at the age of eleven. Hav-ing studied at the Moscow Conservatory, she won prizes in the distinguished Enescu, Marguerite Long and Queen Elisabeth competitions. She maintained a lifelong friendship with her mentor, pianist Sviatoslav Richter, until his death in1997.
Leonskaja has worked with practically every major orchestra in the world and is a welcome guest at prominent festivals (Salzburg, Vienna, Lucerne, Schleswig-Holstein) and concert halls. She has been acclaimed for many of her recordings, receiving the Caecilia Prize (Piano Sonatas by Brahms) and the Diapason d’Or (music by Liszt). In her current home country, Austria, she has been decorated with the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art, 1st Class – the highest honour of its kind.
