Eija Kankaanranta

Known as a dynamic innovator in the field of kantele music, EIJA KANKAANRANTA completed a D.Mus. degree at the Sibelius Academy in 2009. She has premiered new works by composers such as Lotta Wennäkoski, Kaija Saariaho, Asta Hyvärinen, Olli Virtaperko, Jukka Tiensuu and Juhani Nuorvala, and she has appeared as soloist with the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra, the Joensuu City Orchestra, the Pori Sinfonietta and the NBE in the Netherlands.

Between 2016 and 2018, Eija Kankaanranta played kanteles in performances of the opera Only the Sound Remains by Kaija Saariaho in Amsterdam, Helsinki, Paris, Madrid and New York. Her most recent interests are the Superpluck trio with guitarist Rody van Gemert and harpsichord player Assi Karttunen; the blues/folk fusion ensemble Juurakko; and a duo with flautist Camilla Hoitenga focusing on contemporary music. She released a disc titled Griffyr – contemporary kantele music in 2007.
