Tenor TUOMAS KATAJALA is a graduate of the Sibelius Academy and went on to study in Rome and Amsterdam. In addition to his opera career, he has become known as a concert and oratorio soloist and a Lied recitalist. Recently, he has appeared as Tamino in The Magic Flute at Covent Garden in London, at Unter den Linden in Berlin and at the Opéra de Lille; as Count Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Komische Oper in Berlin and as Lensky in Eugene Onegin and the Helmsman in Der fliegende Holländer at the Finnish National Opera. He has performed Bach, Handel, Beethoven, Bruckner, Mahler and others at venues ranging from Avery Fisher Hall in New York to the Salle Pleyel in Paris and the Glyndebourne Festival. Highlights of the 2019–2020 season include Loge in Das Rheingold at the Finnish National Opera and the title role in Mozart’s Idomeneo in a production directed by Casper Holten at the Israel Opera.
In the upcoming season Katajala will debut in two Wagner roles: as Parsifal in Eurajoki and as steersman in The Flying Dutchman at the Finnish National Opera. If the travelling regulations allow, he will also be returning to the steersman’s role at Covent Garden as Max in Der Freischütz.
