EERO HEINONENs career as a pianist was launched by his win in the national Maj Lind Piano Competition in 1966. He studied privately with Astrid Joutseno, with Tarmo Huovinen at the Turku Music Institute and with Dmitri Bashkirov at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. He reached the finals in the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1974.
Eero Heinonen has a broad repertoire that includes the complete piano concertos of Mozart and Beethoven. He has appeared with numerous European orchestras and with prominent Finnish orchestras such as the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Helsinki Philharmonic and Sinfonia Lahti. He has given recitals at home and abroad, for instance at the Berwald Hall in Stockholm, at the St Petersburg Philharmonia, at the Casals Hall in Tokyo and at Wigmore Hall in London, and he has also appeared at numerous international music festivals. His recording of the complete piano works of Sibelius, released in 2000, has attracted considerable international attention.
