Georg Friedrich Händel: Agrippina (concert performance)

Handel’s youthful tragi-comedy caused a sensation in Carnival season in Venice in 1709: it’s only fitting that this concert performance features vocal superstars.

The Turku Music Festival has a treat in store for friends of Baroque opera: a top-quality international production of Handel’s Agrippina. Il Pomo d’Oro, the Baroque ensemble from Venice returning to the Festival for their third visit, will perform Agrippina in concert at Turku Concert Hall as part of a tour that also takes them to the Philharmonie Luxembourg, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Théatre des Champs-Élysées in Paris and the Barbican in London.

Conducted by Maxim Emelyanychev, Il Pomo d’Oro is joined by a cavalcade of stars of the opera world: Franco Fagioli, one of today’s leading countertenors; Luca Pisaroni, bass baritone; Jakub Józef Orliński, countertenor; Kathryn Lewek, soprano; Xavier Sabata, countertenor; Andrea Mastroni, bass; and Biagio Pizzuti, baritone. The title role is taken by the brilliant American mezzo Samantha Hankey, who at the early age of 26 is already establishing herself as one of the most interesting singers of her generation. Having won the Glyndebourne Opera Cup in 2018 and 2nd prize in the Plácido Domingo Operalia competition in 2018, she made her début at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in several productions in the 2018–2019 season (Mefistofele, Adriana Lecouvreur, Carmen, Rheingold, Götterdämmerung and Rigoletto). She also has guest engagements for instance at the Zurich Opera and the Bavarian State Opera.
