Juhani Lagerspetz

JUHANI LAGERSPETZ studied at the Turku Conservatory, the Sibelius Academy and the Leningrad Conservatory. He made his début as a soloist with orchestra at the age of 13, performing Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto no. 2 with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He won 1st prize in the Ilmari Hannikainen Piano Competition in 1975, 1st prize ex aequo in the Maj Lind Competition in 1976 and a special prize in the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1982.

Lagerspetz has performed widely with orchestras and in solo recitals in Europe, Asia and the Americas. He received glowing reviews for his solo recital at Wigmore Hall in London in 1993. He often appears at music festivals at home and abroad (e.g. Kuhmo, Naantali, Vienna, Flanders, Mondsee, Kreuth, St Nazaire, Kitakyushu, Delft, Stavanger). He is a Lecturer of Piano at the Sibelius Academy and was Professor of Piano for the five-year period 2009–2014.
